Safety

Overview

The Vito is packed with features to support drivers at critical moments. If there’s a strong wind, a sudden stop, a lapse of concentration, or an impending collision, the Vito will instinctively protect its driver and passengers.

Attention Assist: always alert

Thanks to steering wheel sensors, the ATTENTION ASSIST function can pick up typical signs of drowsiness and alert the driver through a combination of audio and visual signals. ATTENTION ASSIST comes as standard on the Vito.

Tyre pressure monitoring: Checking tyre pressure so you don’t have to.

The standard tyre pressure monitoring system informs you when there is insufficient tyre pressure, allowing you to take action before setting off.

Crosswind Assist: Higher safety levels in high winds.

Crosswind Assist uses ADAPTIVE ESP® sensor technology to detect instability caused by wind gusts.

The system automatically applies the brakes to selected wheels in order to stabilise the vehicle and increase safety for the driver and other road-users. This is particularly helpful on bridges or when passing trucks and coaches.

A control light in the instrument cluster lets the driver know if Crosswind Assist is intervening.

Blind Spot Assist: Seeing whatever you can’t.

The optional Blind Spot Assist function covers the unseen areas around your vehicle. If a vehicle is detected in the blind spot, a red warning triangle lights up on the mirror.

If the driver operates the turn signal, the illuminated triangle flashes and a warning tone sounds, helping to prevent a collision.

Collision Prevention Assist: Spotting accidents before they happen.

Optional Collision Prevention Assist acts like an extra pair of eyes on the road, constantly looking ahead and actively warning the driver if the distance to the vehicle ahead is insufficient.

A radar sensor in the front of the vehicle – constantly active from 18-100mph - monitors the relative speed and distance to the vehicle in front. Stationary obstacles can be registered when driving at up to 45mph.

If the system registers an unsafe following distance, a warning light shows. If the distance continues to decrease rapidly due to the vehicle's high speed or strong acceleration, an intermittent warning tone is also sounded. At the same time, Collision Prevention Assist primes the Braking Assist system for action.

Lane Keeping Assist: Keeping you on the right track.

Optional Lane Keeping Assist does what it says on the tin. A camera on the inside of the windscreen registers lane markings, while the system monitors the driver's actions in order to determine whether a lane change is intentional or not. If the system is judged to be a drift, steering wheel vibrations and visual signals warn the driver, reducing the likelihood of accidents due to lapses in attention.

Adaptive brake lights: A better warning.

Adaptive Brake Lights ensure that vehicles behind you are fully aware if you are emergency braking. All three brake lamps will start flashing in the event of a critical braking manoeuvre, or the activation of ADAPTIVE ESP or ABS.

This provides a vital warning and can help to shorten a driver’s reaction time. If the vehicle is brought to a complete standstill from a speed greater than 40 mph, the hazard warning lamps are automatically activated to further assist in preventing a collision.

Airbags and Seat belts: Superior safety, as standard.

As part of the extensive safety equipment fitted as standard in the Vito, there are driver and passenger airbags, as well as 3-point seat belts for all seats. The thorax-pelvis side bags and window bags in the front offer additional protection (standard on the Vito Tourer and optional on Vito panel and crew van).

The seat belt warning system, fitted as standard for the driver and passenger seats, further increases passive safety. This delivers a visual and audible signal to remind the driver and passenger to fasten their seat belts as the vehicle starts moving.

ADAPTIVE ESP®: Stability in an instant.

ADAPTIVE ESP® is an innovative handling dynamics control system which takes the vehicle load into account.

In critical handling situations, for instance when there is an imminent risk of skidding, it can help to stabilise the vehicle by applying the brakes to individual wheels and adjusting the engine's torque.

ADAPTIVE ESP® includes the ABS Anti-lock Braking System, ASR acceleration slip regulation, BAS Brake Assist, EBD Brakeforce Distribution, Anti-rollover systems, Hill Start Assist and Automatic brake drying function.

PRE-SAFE® occupant protection system: Preventive protection in critical situations.

The preventive PRE-SAFE® occupant protection system sees accidents before they happen and initiates protective measures for the driver and passengers.

These measures include reversible tensioning of the driver's and front passenger's seat belts, closing open windows and roof systems and – in conjunction with electric seat adjustment – moving the front passenger’s seat into a better position to cope with an accident.

The protective mechanisms of the PRE-SAFE® system are triggered by sudden panic braking, and by hazardous steering movements at high speeds.

Available as an option when electric seat adjustment is also chosen.
